MEET THE TALENTED DUO BEHIND BLACK ARROW
Wednesday, June 14th, 2017
To meet like-minded, passionate & creative women is always inspiring. Such was the case when I had the pleasure of spending time with Jessi and Sarah of Black Arrow. Building a following for their unique earthy & bohemian aesthetic, the girls first caught my eye when they styled our leather Alessio for a Sydney client’s home. You can read more about these innovative stylists in the interview below and be sure to view the fun video of the day they styled the Alessio too.
Tell me a little about your backgrounds, where did the love of interiors and your business begin?
Sarah: Similar story to many…without sounding cliché, I got sick of working in a corporate job I didn’t love anymore. I was also never a very good ‘employee’ as I was always trying to lead and change the way things were done, which, when it’s not your business you can’t always do that. I knew very early on in my working life that I’d have my own business one day, so I set about earning the stripes to get there.
Jessi: I was in the Fashion industry for most of my working life, which was fun in my early 20s but I realised I no longer had what every 20 something fashion intern would describe as a “passion for fashion”. It was when I moved out of home and got to style my first apartment that I realised I wanted to pursue a career in interior styling. Like Sarah, I knew I wanted to work for myself very early on. I am a very hard worker and don’t rest until the job is done but wanted to create a life where that was on my own terms. If I want to take the dog for a walk at 11am, I can. If I want to watch Real Housewives whilst eating lunch, I can. It may mean I am still working at 10pm that night, but that’s my choice – I am in control of my own schedule and I like that.
How would you describe your aesthetic?
The Black Arrow style embodies a predominantly neutral palette combined with honest, earth-drawn materials and textures. Raw materials and elements – timber, leather, stone – thoughtfully interplay to create a space that is overwhelmingly calming. Pared back. Relaxed.
Editing to create a cohesive ‘Relaxed Bohemia’ space, to us, is an art form and one that takes great consideration, restraint and care. We bring craftmanship to Interior Styling.
This stems from the quality artisan wares that we handpick for each project, the focus we dedicate to understand a space and the people who live there, our resolve to bring balance and cohesion, plus our combined knowledge that continuously informs and shapes all of our decisions. Whilst our aesthetic is constant, each home stands as an individual creation, not as a replica of one another.
We are focused on creating immersive, relaxing interiors that feed your soul. Drawing on inspiration from nature and travel, we take great pride in creating a space that grounds you and lifts you, all in the same moment.
I adore the styling of the Leather Alessio Bedhead, talk me through how this came about and your inspiration?
Our inspiration for the Alessio came about when we were given (just about) complete free-reign to design the interior for a bachelor’s pad on Coogee Beach. We wanted to create a guest bedroom that was in keeping with the high-end, luxurious and masculine vibe of the rest of the house, but with a softness that would appeal to a range of guests who might be enjoying the space. We opted for an aged leather in a light tan colour as it gave a more relaxed feel to the otherwise structured bed head style with classic button tuck detail. We added a Juju Hat with natural border to the wall above which tied in the colours just perfectly and really softens the space. Pairing this earthy, raw tan colour with linens in deep navy blues, velvet cushions in mochas and mustard yellows, and patterns like stripes and leopard print worked to create an interesting, yet cohesive room. A hint of feminine style in an otherwise handsome home.
Do you have any styling tips when working with leather?
When working with leather, you need to ensure you are creating a balance of textures. Since leather is a smooth surface, often with a flat finish, you need to pair it with rich textural elements such as open knit throws, velvet, linen, rattan, timber etc. You also need to put thought into the colour and type of leather you are choosing. A tan coloured Aniline leather for example tends to have a more raw, relaxed, bohemian feel whilst a black Pigmented leather is more sleek and minimalist in feel. Then all the other colours and types in between can fit into lots of other styles such as modern contemporary, retro, etc. So, you need to be clear on the look and feel you are going for in the space before deciding on a leather colour and type.

About Heatherly Leather…
Our Piper and Alessio bedheads are made from Aniline leather which is a type of leather dyed exclusively with soluble dyes without covering the surface with a topcoat paint or insoluble pigments. The resulting product retains the hide’s natural surface with the ‘grain’, i.e. visible pores, scars etc. of the complete original animal’s skin structure. All hides vary slightly and will absorb the aniline dye at differing rates. These variations mean your piece is truly unique.
